  4. *   INSTALLING PROCOMM PLUS:
  5. You MUST use PCINSTAL to install or upgrade to PROCOMM PLUS!  DO NOT simply
  6. copy the files from your distribution disks.  Before installing PROCOMM
  7. PLUS, please read pages 2-4 of your QUICKSTART GUIDE.
  8.  
  9. *   LIMITED INSTALLATIONS:
  10. If you're using PCINSTAL to perform an UPGRADE to a 360K or 720K floppy
  11. system, we recommend that you follow these steps.
  12.  
  13. FOR 360K:
  14. 1.  Format a blank disk and copy your old PCPLUS.PRM file to it.  Do
  15. NOT copy any other files to this new disk.
  16.  
  17. 2.  Perform an UPGRADE with this new disk as the destination.
  18.  
  19. 3.  If you HAVEN'T modified or customized any other 1.1B system files (*.DIR,
  20. *.KBD and *.KEY files), the upgrade is complete.  A new set of system files
  21. has been automatically created.
  22.  
  23. 4.  If you HAVE customized other 1.1B system files (and you'd like to convert
  24. these files to the new format), copy them from your 1.1B disk to another
  25. blank disk and use the PCINSTAL Reconfigure option to convert them.
  26. Once the files have been successfully converted, copy them onto your new
  27. destination disk.
  28.  
  29. FOR 720K:
  30. 1.  Format a blank disk and copy your old PCPLUS.PRM, *.KEY, *.DIR and
  31. *.KBD files to it.  If you have several of these system files to convert,
  32. they may not all fit on your destination disk - if this is the case, use the
  33. same procedure outlined under "FOR A 360K UPGRADE" above.  Do NOT copy any
  34. other files to this new disk.
  35.  
  36. 2.  Perform an UPGRADE with this new disk as the destination.  The system
  37. files are converted automatically.
  38.  
  39. *   RECONFIGURING A FLOPPY INSTALLATION:
  40. Please do not change the volume label (PCPLUS_WORK) of the working disk
  41. created by PCINSTAL if you plan to reconfigure later.
  42.  
  43. *   SORTDIR:
  44. SORTDIR.EXE should not be run on any version 2.01 Dialing Directory.  This
  45. file was distributed with version 1.1B and is NOT compatible with version
  46. 2.01.
  47.  
  48. *   LOW MEMORY CONSIDERATIONS:
  49. While adding many features to PROCOMM PLUS, we've retained its ability to
  50. run in just 192K of free RAM.  If your free memory amounts to less than
  51. 295K, however, certain restrictions apply:
  52.  
  53. 1.  PCSETUP, PCKEYMAP, PCEDIT and ASPCOMP must be run as separate programs
  54. from the DOS command line; if you attempt to use the [Alt]-[S], [Alt]-[F8]
  55. or [Alt]-[A] commands within PROCOMM PLUS, you'll receive an "EXTERNAL
  56. PROGRAM" error.  Any script you run should have already been compiled with
  57. ASPCOMP.
  58.  
  59. 2.  KERMIT and COMPUSERVE B+ file transfers may not work; these protocols
  60. use external modules.
  61.  
  62. 3.  A Redisplay buffer size of 10K should function properly with 192K of free
  63. RAM.
  64.  
  65. 4.  The [Alt]-[F4] (DOS Gateway) command may not work.
  66.  
  67. 5.  You'll be restricted to 25 x 80 video mode; select this value as your
  68. Startup mode in Setup, and don't use the 132 column software emulation.
  69.  
  70. 6.  On-line Help may not be available.
  71.  
  72. For a FULL configuration of PROCOMM PLUS 2.01, we recommend 295K of free RAM.

  74. *   SOURCES FOR RELATED FILES:
  75. DATASTORM provides a variety of useful files on our CompuServe Forum and our
  76. in-house BBS.
  77.  
  78. To access the CompuServe DATASTORM Forum, type "GO DATASTORM" at any
  79. CompuServe prompt.

  81. The numbers for the DATASTORM BBS appear on page 37 of your USER MANUAL.

  83. *   TECHNICAL SUPPORT:
  84. Before calling directly for technical support, please read the section of
  85. your USER MANUAL titled "If You Have a Problem" (pages 22 and 23).

  87. *   WINDOWS AND DESQVIEW:
  88. We've included sample .DVP files for DESQView and a sample PCPLUS.PIF file
  89. for Windows 3.0.  The Windows icon PCPLUS.ICO is also included as a
  90. replacement for Windows' standard DOS icon.
  91.  
  92. These sample configuration files may need to be "fine-tuned" for your
  93. system.
  94.  
  95. *   SUPPLEMENTAL FILES:
  96. Your PROCOMM PLUS distribution disks include a variety of additional
  97. files, including alternate Dialing Directories (like EASTBBS.DIR).
  98.  
  99. *   DT_PATCH:
  100. We've included the program DT_PATCH to allow the application of "patches"
  101. to PROCOMM PLUS.  To display the syntax for DT_PATCH, type
  102.  
  103.     DT_PATCH
  104.  
  105. without any arguments.  Apply patches ONLY to backup copies of your programs.
  106. Examine the comments in each patch file to determine if the patch is
  107. appropriate for your PC.
